Honestly whatever works with your budget, they're all great cameras! You can get a slightly older model that still takes great pictures for pretty cheap on ebay. Heck, I'm shooting with a 1D right now lol

I've had much better luck with the auto focus on the 1D compared to my 20D (the 20d only has 9 AF points compared to the 1ds 45!), and I really like the body style since its the professional (bigger than the 20D and doesn't have the auto settings), though if I could do it again I would probably get something a couple steps up from the 1D like the 1Ds or later. I haven't been really happy with the 1d's image quality and am hoping to upgrade soonish.

I got the 1D on ebay for about $300 for just the body (which was awesome since it was a $5000 camera new!). I'm not really familiar with Nikons, but from the basic stats I've seen the D40 looks like a solid camera. If it's your first DSLR I would go with something like the D40, 20D, or something in a similar body style thats within your price range. The 1D and the others in the professional series are HUGE cameras and kind of complicated. I personally LOVE all the buttons, lack of program modes, and even the giant body style, but for someone starting out it's more camera than you need and would probably be more frustrating than anything
